ServiceWear Apparel announced Thomas “Zabo” McCants, Park Manager at Poinsett State Park in South Carolina as the 2016 Service Spotlight Park Ranger of the Year. The award honors a park ranger who shows exemplary service in preserving and protecting our nation’s scenic, historic, and natural splendor for the benefit of citizens and future generations.
Thomas “Zabo” McCants was nominated by Brad Lane, Park Manager of Lee State Park along with long-time volunteer, Tim Fishburne for the Service Wear Apparel, Service Spotlight, Park Ranger of the Year award in recognition of his willingness to go over and above the call of duty.
Ranger McCants is known for putting park visitor experiences above all else. In the last few years he has completely transformed Poinsett from a quiet CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) Park tucked back in the woods into a booming destination park. He engaged his staff and turned Poinsett into a premiere mountain biking destination. He worked with the local community and mountain biking groups to add over 20 miles of mountain biking trails, while protecting its resources and the natural feel of the park.
In the last few years, Poinsett has dealt with some of Mother Nature’s worst disasters from ice storms, to a 1000-year flood event wreaking havoc on the park, to Hurricane Mathew. Even through all of this, Poinsett has nearly doubled its revenue intake from a few years ago before the transformation. While Zabo has worked hard to improve Poinsett and to care for its visitors, a major focus of his has been the Rangers that work under him. He knows that his job as a Manager is to prepare the next wave of Rangers so that they are ready to take over when their time comes.
ServiceWear Apparel’s Chief Development Officer, Jim Burnett, presented the award to McCants at Poinsett State Park in Wedgefield, South Carolina on February 23, 2017. Approximately 50 South Carolina State Park Service personnel, volunteers, and family members attended the event. “Ranger McCants is very deserving of this honor,” Burnett said. “He embodies exactly what we had in mind when we created this award.”
